Does he want that? The actual article doesn’t quote anything which backs up the headline.

Saying it makes no sense is different from pushing for it’s removal. Given that so many software companies are trying to shovel ai down their developers throats whether they like it or not, it seems like his prediction is likely.

And the posts across lemmy show that the hate is for the label itself, not the content (yes there are examples of bad ai content, but let’s be honest did anyone expect call of duty: global imperialist 14 to be any good regardless of whether it was made by overworked soulless humans or a soulless machine?)

Seems like this is just the “I hate ai” and “I hate epic games” circle jerks making a baby

It looks like they are going to start building an AI assistant into Unreal Engine, which would mean every future Unreal-based game would be questionable. No wonder he’s pushing this nonsense.

Game store owner wants owner of other game store to stop doing something so his game store won’t look as bad.

A bit yes, but also not great. See how they treated the horse game, which prob will cause the studio to close. And the whole not standing up against payment providers when they try to ban porn in general. (Think they might have done a small thing, but it took long, and wasn’t coordinated), and then there is the moderation issues, the etc etc. Still Steam is better than Epic, but that is only because Epic is just bad as a storefront. Steam is lucky they didn’t work on that harder than they did and assumed they could just get away with giving free games (it still can’t properly keep you logged in).

See how they treated the horse game,

The game where the preview version they sent to valve had a scene where a little girl asks to ride a naked man? And then rides the naked man? That horse game?

I dont know, as steam has not told anybody why they object to the game. You confused me complaining about the process with steam with me talking about the content of the game.

So what is your complaint? That Steam is not obligated to host every game submitted to them? Or that Steam does not take the time to provide a point by point critique of every game submitted to them?

That they are a bad publisher, don’t provide good feedback, their tools on the developer sides suck (the stories I heard from people who have released things), they don’t help out smaller developers out at all, the 30% fee if you are small less fee if you are big thing is silly, that they are opaque as fuck when dealing with them, their moderation sucks (see how long it took them to do anything about review bombing for example), etc etc.

a point by point critique of every game

nice bit of bad faith there.

One of the things that really weirds me out about gamers is that when they pay 10 bucks for a game they become the most entitled people around (not talking about the people here, just in general, my comments here about steam should also be seen as that), but they never are as entitled towards steam which takes a 30% bite out of that ten bucks for every purchase (*). Even when steam is like all tech companies simply a non-communicative and hard to contact monster of a company. Im still amazed for example that one of my games on my wishlist is simply a grayed out void. (I know what happened and which game it was, a developer who released a game on steam told me how to figure it out, still odd steam didnt tell us why it was removed. Same with the misery debacle (dont get me wrong steam defenders, the dev(s) were at fault there, but steam could have be more upfront about it (they included stalker 2 assets I heard) but it is a similar sort of dmca shit like what is plaguing YouTube).

*: I dont actually know if keys bought from key resellers like humble bundle for example replace that 30% or if they take another bite, replacing it would explain why humble can sell so many keys at 20% off. Not that I dont have a separate rant about humble (which I suspect will not live very long anymore, as it has been acting weird).

In an interview he said that they warned him about that scene when they sent the preview version…

While I think the steam monopoly is bad, the developer has acted in bad faith.

From what I heard they dropped that shit, steam still dropped them and didn’t mentioned why, that isn’t bad faith, nobody was saying it wasn’t an edgy game, and the devs didn’t hide that.

You confused me complaining about the process with steam with me talking about the content of the game.

I mean lets not forget there are several sex with hitler games on steam.

Just wait it out you fucking assholes. You’re all gonna use AI, we’re gonna get in a huff, you won’t stop, we’ll eventually tired ourselves out and then buy your stupid AI games. It’s the same song and dance everytime corporate America does something horrible that makes them more money.

Yeah that’s true, I’ve been frustrated by that before. I just think including ourselves in that is admitting defeat immediately; we can each in this thread decide that we’ve reached our line! I sold my PS5 a few weeks ago, and am selling my TV at the moment. I’m back to a PS2 and will be buying a cheap small TV to play it. I don’t agree with the way the gaming industry is going, and has been going since horse armour tbh.

Could but won’t. Your argument is the same as always. Is it a good idea? Yes. Would it help us affect change? Yes. Will people do it? No.

Everyone is good at either not caring or accepting an excuse they can live with so they don’t have to make a sacrifice. They would follow the majority if the majority actually did something but that is very likely impossible. Any movement to boycott AI games would have to compete with literally billions of dollars invested in marketing, advertising and social engineering that coerce us to buy in. At some point you just have to decide how you will delay with the reality that the majority really isn’t an ally in waiting, its your biggest opposition, content to do whatever is easiest for themselves, even if you can see clearly how unwise it is.

Much more significant ethical and moral issues have arisen that have also been crushed by the selfishness of the herd. If you boycott, you cut yourself off, diverging from the majority culture, in which most of our collective resources are invested. The majority is what makes being a minority, of any kind, a risk because it moves us in a direction with little regard for who it leaves behind or why.

I absolutely hear what you’re saying, and I don’t disagree with you; it’s an uphill battle. I also feel frustrated that boycotts aren’t stuck to by most people.

It is possible, though. We’re human beings with our own faculties and we’re capable of making our own decisions of something aligns with our values - regardless of internal or external pressures.

I used to use Spotify constantly. I boycotted them around three years ago and haven’t touched the service since. I boycotted Amazon around the same time, right when I was in the middle of a long series of audio books which I’ll now likely never finish I guess. I’ve stopped eating out at any restaurants, or using any delivery services. I’ve stopped smoking, and drinking. I sold my PS5. All for various reasons, and all against marketing pressure, peer pressure, or my own temptation.

I understand that the majority of people don’t stick to boycotts, and I get it. In this case, some people don’t care that genAI is used etc, some people aren’t aware of the problems with genAI, some people aren’t aware it’s even being used. Also - life is hard, and it often sucks. We can’t blame people wanting to just shut up and chill out, rather than deprive themselves of something that might make them happy. Totally understandable.

What I’m saying, though, is that we, the people having this discussion right now in this thread, seem to agree that genAI sucks and that it also sucks that nobody sticks to boycotts.

So why don’t we just decide to boycott? Not talking about the majority, or the public, or some great chunk of the population - I’m saying you, and me, and the other people in this thread. You can decide to boycott and to stick to it. Doesn’t matter what the majority do. I have decided to boycott, and stick to it.

imagine being this dedicated to being fucking mid

e: correction, rolling over and exposing your belly for generative fucking AI of all things isn’t mid. it’s fucking broken behavior, especially right after similarly unpopular garbage (crypto, metaverses) pushed by the exact same people failed in the market because the target audience mostly just sneered at it and refused to buy in

like I’m sorry you feel like you’re forced to buy CoD 7 or whatever other AAA games succumb to this shit, but have you considered expanding your tastes past garbage? if you want to say fuck you to Tim in a language he understands, go play a good epic game or a a great epic game for free instead of paying $80 or $200 or whatever the fuck these jokers think it should cost for fucking trash.
