This is a different sort of counting then the Ukrainian numbers posted here sometimes. Meduza only counts Russian losses(so no North Korean or other non Russians) and more importantly verifies all of them individually from public sources. This takes a long time so some deaths are not recorded for months and also probably means they miss quite a few deaths. As such these figures are the lowest reasonable floor for any realistic guess. The Ukrainian figures are probably the upper bound. At least historically enemy losses were overestimate in past conflicts.
That being said this also shows a lot of other interesting things. So well worth a read.
Addendum:
A human “casualty” total is also usually the sum of KIA and disabled/wounded.
It varies from conflct to confict and country to country.
(KIA * 3) is generally a “casualty count”, but that is a rough estimate always. (In some cases, large equipment is included in the total sum of casualty count, but that isn’t applicable here.)
(Vehicle kill * estimate number of passengers) can be a thing.
My point: fog of war is a bitch and true numbers won’t be known for years.
A baseline low estimate of 260K dead out of high estimate of 1.5 million total casualties. A 17% death rate. That’s a fucking horrible injured/killed ratio and it’s the most positive estimate. In reality the numbers are likely much worse. The dead/injured ratio could approach 1:3 or higher.
