Russia's government has allocated more than 4.3 billion rubles ($55 million) to support the tourism industry in occupied Crimea and Sevastopol through one-time payments to tourism workers, Russian authorities said on July 11.
Denys Chystikov, deputy permanent representative of the Ukrainian president in Crimea, told Suspilne that a significant share of the current tourist flow consists of Russian servicemen and their family members traveling to the peninsula on state-funded vacation packages.
I dunno how much morale-boosting the Kremlin is doing for its military if it’s shipping them to an area that’s substantially severed from a logistical standpoint and lacks fuel and electricity.
It might be a desertion prevention setup. If a frontline soldier goes on vacation to his family in a remote region of Russia, then hiding from the state is going to be relatively easy if he wants to. But if he can only go on vacation to Crimea, then there’s far less chance of escape.
