Once again, the US is negotiating on behalf of Russia.
I’m surprised Trump hasn’t asked for a cut yet.
… He has actually. The
RussianAmerican 28 point “peace” proposal stipulated that the Russian assets would be used as reparation for Ukraine, but 50% would have to be invested in US companies.
Make the consequences of russian aggressions real, do the right thing and give Ukraine the money to rebuild and defend itself. Fuck what putins puppets have to say!
I know the frozen assets are supposed to be the carrot vs the stick, but it’s not working.
They should tell putin, withdraw from Ukraine by xyz date or 50% will be immediately provided to help defend Ukraine.
And according to politico, Italy, Bulgaria, Malta and Czechia have joined the group of dissenting countries.
Whatever their motives, the legal ground for using the frozen assets is very shaky regardless. Countries like France have been hiding behind the Belgians back, while at the same time categorically refusing to use the frozen funds located in France to be used. They are fully committed to making sure it’s somebody else that will get screwed over this. The fact is that it’s incredibly difficult, not to mention completely unprecedented, to use these types of frozen funds. Not even during WW2 was this done with German assets.
The service station change Teboil, in Finland, belongs 100 % to Russian Lukoil, because all German-owned property in Finland became Soviet property when the peace agreement between Finland and Soviet Union was made in year 1944.
So, there is precedent indeed, and Moscow is known to be okay with the concept.
Technically the EU won’t " touch" the assets. They’ll use it as a collateral for a loan with a conditional future warreparation from Ruzz.
Add: And yes, this legal manoeuvring has no precendet afaik. It’s really very creative.
