Map Enthusiasts@sopuli.xyz•World map with countries real sizes
19·3 months agoIt’s a really good map for navigating at sea. The compass directions are always going to be accurate vs. something like the Robinson projection with accurate size but distorted shape.
Every projection is a compromise and a distortion. Globe is best :)
More to your point, is is probably the most popular projection – even online maps like Google use a version of it – so it is worth being able to recognize it and understand its strengths and weaknesses.

Map Enthusiasts@sopuli.xyz•What Percentage of Salary Is Spent on Renting a One-Bedroom Apartment in European Cities?
3·3 months agoI think it’s a good choice for this particular map, but I could imagine a different map with more cities which would be a bad choice for pie charts.

Map Enthusiasts@sopuli.xyz•What Percentage of Salary Is Spent on Renting a One-Bedroom Apartment in European Cities?
0·3 months agoDo you have an example? For me, it would be very difficult to tell the difference between a single color that’s a mix of 50% blue, 50% green, vs 45% blue, 55% green, and have any kind of idea what value they corresponded to. But with a pie chart, it’s easy.
Are you talking about this kind of bar chart kind of thing?

(picture attached)
For me, this wouldn’t work as well on a map because a pie chart is kind of like a big point, but the rectangular shape of the column would look weird on a map. You wouldn’t know where the center of the column was supposed to be as easily as the pie chart is clearly directly on top of the city it’s talking about.
But most of this seems like it is about subjective tastes rather than peer-reviewed studies on what kind of map is more useful.

7·3 months agoGreatly prefer this as well. It’s a lot easier to tell the difference between 50 and 75% with a pie chart than it is with your eyeballs looking at how similar or different two colors are.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•How decentralized Bluesky is compared to the Fediverse.English
6·6 months agoI think the difference is that while other services boom and bust, the fediverse keeps growing slowly because it is decentralized, and can’t be enshittified in the same way.
It is not as easy or attractive as Bluesky right now, but it keeps growing slowly and getting more kinds of people.
Maybe it won’t be the network of choice for journalists, metal celebrities, etc, like twitter and bluesky, but it already is making its way as something more like old school tumblr – some people like it, some don’t.
Why are you so mad lol
Where do you live? Because my family considers themselves midwestern. I’m sorry you feel that way about it.
How many people do you know from the great plains states?
I have family from Kansas and Colorado, who worked the wheat harvests going from north Texas through to the Dakotas and eastern Montana. Eastern Colorado and western Kansas are not very different at all. I don’t see why you would want to say a cultural definition is incorrect when it’s people’s self identity.
The census bureau did not invent the term, nor are they in charge of it.
XIII? Or possible earlier?
