Interesting video, and I watched the whole thing. And even as accurate as the Nintendo Switch NES emulator is, there’s still lag. Mario still runs like he’s on ice. On actual hardware, you have pretty tight control, but on the Switch, there’s a lag that makes the game unplayable to me. Still talking about SMB1, but the lag is in all the games. I find it unplayable.

The Super NES Classic, which I have (and I have modded to run other games, but it still runs the same emulator — it’s not running RetroArch, which I believe it is capable of doing) is good enough for Zelda 3 (as is NSO), but for Mario… it’s not quite there. I was so good at it when I had an NES. Not world record good, but good enough to beat the game without warps and without dying. Did that a few times for friends.

So the video is essentially saying that Nintendo requiring docks be their proprietary basic one and not supporting third-party docks with more features could be a sign of companies like Apple, Samsung, and others making their USB/Thunderbolt ports proprietary?

Doubt it.

Nintendo is in kind of its own little tech bubble. It’s not really considered tech, it’s considered a toy, so while the Switch OS may have started as an Android fork (I’m not sure how true this was at release — prior to the Switch launch it was reported that they were forking Android), it’s not an Android device and should never be (and fortunately isn’t) treated like one. And yes, it uses a USB port, but it’s not an open USB port, it’s a Nintendo accessory port and should be treated as such.

I don’t like the idea of Nintendo using proprietary crap, but it’s Nintendo, if you want to pay $450 for a minor update to the Switch 1, you kinda know what you’re getting. If you love the Switch and have had it since release, maybe that’s worth it. I just got the Switch 1 OLED 11 months ago, so the Switch 2 doesn’t appeal to me. Maybe if they had it when I was ready to buy one, I would have bought it instead, but a minor spec bump less than a year out? Hard pass. Especially with like two games (DK:B and MKW). I play Animal Crossing, and Switch 2 isn’t doing shit for us. (Interestingly, AC New Horizons is designed to scale up to whatever hardware you run it on. PC/Mac users have gotten it up to 8K without any real work. So on a Switch 2 it’ll just take advantage of the higher resolution/frame rate without needing a patch. Even so, my AC runs fine on my Switch. I do get a little pop in on my island if I watch the edges sometimes, but it’s no big deal (and Isabelle is still telling me my island needs more shit on it to get that coveted AF 5 star rating.))

It’s Lemmings not Lemmites, so keeping that same energy… Piefeedings? Piefeddings? I think Piefedders sounds better, though none of them are great.

However, Piefed does have fed in it like fediverse, so it’s not a bad name, just hard to riff off of.

Thanks! I went and followed the discussion link the other guy posted. I saw one concern — the handling of voting. But someone/some people are going behind a lot of those comments and saying they fixed it based on user feedback. So that’s good. I also feel I understand the two (Lemmy and Piefed) and their relationship a bit more.

If it sounds like I’m a bit eager to learn, it’s because I like to help others, but to do that I have to understand things first.

So let me see if I understand you correctly. The “one I’m on now” you refer to in the third paragraph, meaning dbzer0, is an instance of Lemmy (along with others) that are federated (loosely united) together in the same feed.

You’re on piefed.social, so you’re federated with dbzer0 and the other Lemmy feeds. So it’s not like you’re on a whole other federated social network like Bluesky (which is more like Twitter whereas Lemmy is more like Reddit). But it has different programming, so you can access more/different features from your end than I can on mine, but we still have access to the same communities?

Still kinda struggling to understand how fediverse stuff works.

I’m doing my part! Just joined a couple days ago. Thought I could stick with Reddit but it got too far to the right for me. They crossed a line I can’t ignore, but I like the format, so I’m here. I knew Reddit was going to be winding down soon so I didn’t put as much effort in. I’d like to start a couple communities here, whereas I wouldn’t have tried over there. I just hope the toxic people who run the communities there don’t see what I’m doing and try to invade. I mean we could use the numbers but not the toxicity — though I feel that that comes with any influx of new users.
