Honestly, yeah.

For certain niches, the Fediverse is great - but it absolutely does suck for local community stuff.

Big tech platforms make those hyper-niche communities easier to set up, in exchange for all that sweet sweet data - and that won’t change anytime soon.

To do that on Fediverse you’d probably have to host an instance and get people to sign up if they aren’t already. Which for a techy or privacy orientated group they might actually do - but I don’t picture most hobbiest groups having the technical know-how or want to do that.

Maybe one day enough of the population will become tech-savy or privacy aware that niche local community Fedi instances might actually become a thing - but that day certainly isn’t today

Yeah, there’s a reason many instances are defederated from Threads. It’s a classic strategy, and the only way to avoid it is to not give them the foothold they want.

I do understand wanting to give people a trial of sorts without having to dive in - but personally I reckon that’s the best way to do this, and its the way I did during the first Reddit Exodus (RIP kBin)

As long as you do some research to avoid the more toxic spaces, and are respectful, people here will help you figure out the rest.

Exactly. I seriously doubt any of these corps couldn’t put together statistics for non-exclusively digital releases vs. their physical counterparts if they really wanted to.

For Sony it makes sense, because the statistics are a means to an end - but Nintendo is trying to justify physical sales, so why are they skewing the data too?? Are they really sabotaging their own argument because they can’t be bothered to parse the data properly?

Honestly, it’s so dishonest on all fronts that digital-only content is being thrown into these stats. Of course something only offered digitally is going to be bought digitally.

I don’t believe for a second that Sony, Nintendo, etc. don’t have separate data for each and every category of media they sell, and so could absolutely do an apples to apples comparison of digital vs. physical sales if they actually wanted to.

You could try Anubis? From what I’ve heard it works well against bots - but if not implemented properly can also block “good scrapers” like search engines and the internet archive that increase discoverability

As much as I like to joke about it, that sounds like a legal nightmare… an AI making all decisions of a company, so now there’s even less accountability than before

People are upset about the lack of regulation, the fact that these companies have been allowed to scrape everything ever and make a commercial product with other people’s creations without agency or payment

This is certainly what I’m upset about.

It’s mass intellectual property theft on a level that’s never been seen before, yet there’s been minimal Government action against it - and since everybody affected has been left to fend for themselves, only the giants who can afford it have any meaningful legal defence against it.

If that were the case, and it was something I chose, I certainly wouldn’t mind it anywhere near as much - but the ones being forced upon you by every tech company alive right now are none of those things, and are all data harvesters disguised as utilities.

It sort of makes sense for most of the countries on there, as they (or the slice of them in the awkward timezone) aren’t big enough to justify splitting their timezones in half. Just pick the one that matches the most people and move on…

But what the bloody hell are countries like Spain, Portugal, and France doing?? Basically their whole country is in the wrong timezone!

I think AI tools have (and will have) their uses, but AI as a whole has been hyped up so much for so long now that the bubble is bound to burst sooner or later.

And when it does, hopefully we can go back to not having AI shoved into every fucking thing imaginable…

No I don’t want an AI on my phone or computer trawling through all my data for you, just to give me some handy search feature I almost certainly won’t use.
