It’s definitely the case the fediverse requires a lot of specific, technical knowledge to really grasp, and that the onboarding story for new users is pretty confusing, especially since the most significant decision you make (what instance to host your account on) is the first decision you make, before you even see any content. Oh yeah, for sure. I’m a bit of the belief that the 1-9-90 rule means that as we expand the 1% that are actively posting, the commenters and lurkers will follow, so I think these efforts to empower new folks to create and run a community are a great idea and effort, and getting folks to feel like they’re not alone is a good way to make that more accessible.

I wholeheartedly agree. Having a good idea for a community is very easy, but putting in the legwork over the years to draw an audience is very hard. There isn’t some brilliant idea you can have to jumpstart participation with a good name and sidebar, you actually have to show up every day and put in the effort.

There’s a way to do it, and there’s a way not to do it. If you’re reposting something that directly solicits feedback and you don’t know enough to be able to respond, that’s no fun. If you’re looking over reddit, carefully selecting interesting content, and hosting good conversation about it, that’s very healthy. Given you’re using words like “large scale” and “direct,” I assume you mostly have the unhealthy kind in mind.

I wish I had written this. I think of communities as fedi actors that boost my posts, so when someone responds directly to my post or comment, I assume it’s a direct reply to me. Conceptually, I don’t see a difference between the tags.pub relays and the threadiverse communities — you are sending a notification to me when you respond to a comment or at the top level of a post. Folks are constantly complaining they want more niche communities, and then make it extremely unpleasant to post niche content to niche communities, and it is deeply frustrating and discouraging.

I too wish Reddit would federate, but that’s not happening, and forcibly doing it yourself doesn’t really seem to be accomplishing your goals.

Idk what to tell you. I mostly like what you repost from Reddit, but saying all this is absolutely making the situation worse. It feels like you could make some simple changes, keep posting most of what you do, and make a lot of folks a lot happier.

The folks behind monsterdon have the number one feature I want, which is the ability to replay social media posts, synchronized with the broadcast. If you miss monsterdon live, they have an app that lets you indicate when you start the movie, and then it shows all the toots offset from when you started the movie, as if you were watching it live with everyone else. It’d be awesome if I could do the same with a match-specific hashtag.
