The goal of these posts is to identify community gaps that people want filled, but not to arbitrarily create communities to “fill those gaps”. Instead put together teams that can/will work together to sustain their communities (many hands make light work).
To that end, I’m looking for anyone’s input about potential communities (not necessarily to be created anytime soon). Some ideas about potential input (don’t need to answer any or all the questions):
- Is there an inactive community you would like to subscribe and/or post to? (No pressure to try and revive it)
- Do you have an idea for a new community? (It would be helpful if you provide some detail about what the community would be focused on and what sort of posts it would contain)
- Do you have a suggested community name? (Not required, but if you have an idea, feel free to share)
- Do you have a suggested community instance/server? (Some servers have significantly different views on different topics)
- Are you willing to be a community mod? (Not to pressure you, just to provide support, if indicated)
Discussion of a working guide to be added to the sidebar has been suggested. It’s been confirmed that Piefed has the functionality for each community to have its own wiki.
The guide could contain:
- Beginners guide to the fediverse (many exist), perhaps a quick overview (with links to more extensive breakdowns) before jumping into the threadiverse (Thanks ImmortalColeSlaw @lemmy.today)
- On-boarding/quick breakdown of the threadiverse with relevant terms
- Demographics. Know demographic sets: Fedecan 2025, Lemmy.nz 2025, Any others?
- Suggestion of types of posts (ex. opinion requests, question-answer)
- Any other suggestions?

Ooohh what a neat community this is! This post is such a great idea. I’m still relatively new so I don’t know a whole lot but I feel like this post really can help identify things.

Having your (someone relatively new) opinion would be great. Feel free to let me/us know if you’ve noticed anything “missing” from your experience or even if it difficulty/confusion using the software (though not the main purpose, I’ve passed along a couple ideas from these posts to the devs).
I’ve found several guides made over the last 3 years on the whole “beginners to the fediverse” kind of thing. It would be great for an updated all in one kind of guide for all beginners. I think that might be more up to each instance though.
From what I’ve read it seems extra challenging if you’re on a smaller instance because a lot of communities aren’t fedirated so you have to search for them yourself. Which for the only one I’ve had to do, is kind of wonky on my app of choice, voyager.
Since this community and proposed wiki was going to be targeted at community creators/mods, I was thinking that people would probably hangout a bit in the threadiverse (learning the intricacies) before creating a community. But that’s a good observation, that many are probably joining and looking to add a community soon after. Added your idea to the wiki subsection of the post :)
I feel like there’s a bot or something that helps with finding all the communities for smaller instance, but the exact thing escapes me. Probably also worth putting into the wiki when I figure it out. Haha.
