The goal of these posts is to identify community gaps that people want filled, but not to arbitrarily create communities to “fill those gaps”. Instead put together teams that can/will work together to sustain their communities (many hands make light work).

To that end, I’m looking for anyone’s input about potential communities (not necessarily to be created anytime soon). Some ideas about potential input (don’t need to answer any or all the questions):

  • Is there an inactive community you would like to subscribe and/or post to? (No pressure to try and revive it)
  • Do you have an idea for a new community? (It would be helpful if you provide some detail about what the community would be focused on and what sort of posts it would contain)
  • Do you have a suggested community name? (Not required, but if you have an idea, feel free to share)
  • Do you have a suggested community instance/server? (Some servers have significantly different views on different topics)
  • Are you willing to be a community mod? (Not to pressure you, just to provide support, if indicated)

Discussion of a working guide to be added to the sidebar has been suggested. It’s been confirmed that Piefed has the functionality for each community to have its own wiki.

The guide could contain:

  • Beginners guide to the fediverse (many exist), perhaps a quick overview (with links to more extensive breakdowns) before jumping into the threadiverse (Thanks ImmortalColeSlaw @lemmy.today)
  • On-boarding/quick breakdown of the threadiverse with relevant terms
  • Demographics. Know demographic sets: Fedecan 2025, Lemmy.nz 2025, Any others?
  • Suggestion of types of posts (ex. opinion requests, question-answer)
  • Any other suggestions?

Started Communities:

Suggested Communities - Potential subscribers or active users:

  • Mahjong
    • missingno @fedia.io
  • Deer (images)
    • Auster @thebrainbin.org
  • Rooftops (pictures of rooftops, rooftop gardens, cozy rooftop spaces)
    • Potential subscribers: squirrel @cake.kobel.fyi, vicinus @piefed.zip
  • CottageIndustry (users can offer items they make for sale)
    • This idea probably needs some additional considerations (spam, payment, fraud, etc.) before actualizing. Some initial commentary here.
    • billionsandbillions @piefed.social

Suggested Feeds:

  • Hand&Eye (showcase anything made with your hands (only physical, nothing digital))
    • Examples: Woodworking, leathercraft, pottery, soap, candles, baskets, clothes, bookbinding, stained glass, glass blowing, bags etc.
    • billionsandbillions @piefed.social

Struggling Communities (throw a post/comment their way, if you can):

Also, let us know if you have any suggestions about this community or post.

Edit: adjusted bullet point formatting for mobile.
Edit 2: Added a suggested Community and Feed.
Edit 3: Added “Beginners guide to the fediverse” as a potential portion of the wiki.
Edit 4: Added triathlon community to post

For what it’s worth, I recently took over the !triathlon@lemmy.world community and am trying to revive it.

I personally like reading about the participation in the sport, but I’m also trying to include some discussion around the pro events too.

    Edit: added the link above

I’ve always found the triathlon to be an interesting sport. Happy to hear you’re working to revive the community :)

If you want, add a link to your comment and I’ll throw it into the main post so everyone can see it each week.

Every PieFed community has wiki functionality although few know about or use it.

Yeah, that would definitely be a nice to have. I’m not sure it’s a Lemmy feature though, so not sure most of the threadiverse instances (~600/750) would be able to have one, without creating one, the way your instance did.

Although I imagine some instances wouldn’t have much to say in theirs. I feel slrpnk.net is pretty unique in that way. The unique content and outlook is a lot of the reason it’s my go to recommendation to my irl friends if they want to try out the threadiverse :)

Ooohh what a neat community this is! This post is such a great idea. I’m still relatively new so I don’t know a whole lot but I feel like this post really can help identify things.

Thank you. Glad you like it :)

Having your (someone relatively new) opinion would be great. Feel free to let me/us know if you’ve noticed anything “missing” from your experience or even if it difficulty/confusion using the software (though not the main purpose, I’ve passed along a couple ideas from these posts to the devs).

I’ve found several guides made over the last 3 years on the whole “beginners to the fediverse” kind of thing. It would be great for an updated all in one kind of guide for all beginners. I think that might be more up to each instance though.

From what I’ve read it seems extra challenging if you’re on a smaller instance because a lot of communities aren’t fedirated so you have to search for them yourself. Which for the only one I’ve had to do, is kind of wonky on my app of choice, voyager.

Since this community and proposed wiki was going to be targeted at community creators/mods, I was thinking that people would probably hangout a bit in the threadiverse (learning the intricacies) before creating a community. But that’s a good observation, that many are probably joining and looking to add a community soon after. Added your idea to the wiki subsection of the post :)

I feel like there’s a bot or something that helps with finding all the communities for smaller instance, but the exact thing escapes me. Probably also worth putting into the wiki when I figure it out. Haha.

    I’ve wondered about something like r/moderatepolitics …

Often times I’ll post a fairly moderate/mainstream response to a post, get a wild amount of upvotes but then most of the comments are angrily opposed. So I do wonder if there’s a vast pool of “normies” who may not engage simply because they are tired of being yelled at. (I have to admit, it gets disheartening. But, as I wish more people were bringing moderate/normal/reality to the Right, I feel obliged to do so here.)

Not sure how you could or if you’d even want to stop the random angry .ml folks from popping in and yelling but…

    Edit: An example, https://piefed.ca/post/967518#comment_6353503

My comment is the most upvoted but most of the responses are strenuously opposed. (Sometimes, comically so.)

I thought the linked post/conversation was quite good. I didn’t read all the comments, but I would have upvoted all that I did, because they added to the discussion in a respectful way (I found them assertive, not angry).

You were also one of the earliest parent comments and had a confrontational, but not disrespectful take. So, to me, it would make sense you have more upvotes than most other comments.

Not to say if it is or isn’t, but I think you may be having an issue because you believe your viewpoints are “moderate/normal/reality”. The linked post is in an anarchist community, on an anarchist instance. In which case, the anarchist point of view would be the “normal” one. This may be the case for many of your other “comments are angrily opposed” situations.

Just to add to the viewpoint consideration, a quick search showed only 1 of the 56 comments was from a .ml user.

Based on your comment and the linked discussion, if you wanted to make a “r/moderatepolitics” you would probably want to do so one a neoliberal instance (ex. .world). I think this would better align your world view, with the potential views/commenters of your posts.

That’s a really good point. I rareiy check on the actual instance (tend to browse by all, the fediverse being so small…)

    Idea for a community: “hand&eye”

It would be for showcasing anything you have made with your hands. Only something physical, nothing digital. Woodworking, leathercraft, pottery, soap, candles, baskets, clothes, bookbinding, stained glass, glass blowing, bags etc.

It could be an easier gateway for people to find different hobbies or communities for people interested in creating things.

It should have links to all the specific “sister” communities listed.

Another could be “cottageindustry” where people who make things(mentioned above) with their hands can offer them for sale.

There’s !imadethis@lemmy.zip which doesn’t have rules against posting non-physical objects but it’s probably as good as it’s going to get given how many users Fediverse has.

I know quite a few of those specific communities exist, but I like the idea. It just may not work best as a community. Perhaps a “Feed” (Piefed feature, maybe others?) that groups together a bunch of communities of a similar topic into it’s own “Feed” that people can subscribe to.

The “CottageIndustry” idea is interesting. I’m worried about just a flood of spam from people trying to see if they can make the threadiverse an Etsy. Maybe if it was a mod only posting community with weekly posts that potential artists crafter’s could post their “wares” to? Seems like it would be pretty easy to automate the posts, just need a mod who doesn’t mind watching the comments.

      Thoughts on either/both?

If it can work as a feed, I don’t see why that would be a problem. Although are feeds specific to Piefed? That might make it less visible than a community that other software can utilize.

I’m sure there’s not too many people on the fediverse who would actually sell early on. It’s possible that a mod can maybe review posts until another solution. Now that I think about it I can see it being abused.
