Every dot is a place where a film or a series was really shot, taken from the filming location statements on Wikidata and from the filming sections of Wikipedia articles. 14,611 locations from 9,201 films and series, across 156 countries.

It is not complete and it is not meant to look complete. It holds what Wikidata and Wikipedia actually record, so India has 406 locations against an industry that makes more films than Hollywood, and about half the dots resolve to a town rather than to the exact spot.

I hope to add more points and items on the map. Free, no ads, no signup: https://thefilmmap.com/

This topic is close to my heart, especially about Hindi movies. Many of the old songs were shot in historical locations and preserve how the place used to look back then. Crowd sourcing and tagging/linking youtube videos would be a nice way to see how a place evolved over the decades.

That is why I am posting a lot, perhaps spamming the web a bit. I really think it is fun to get ideas from people and see if it fits with Filmmap.

The idea is really cool: tagging/linking youtube videos would be a nice way to see how a place evolved over the decades. I have to see if it is possible for me to do that in some ways.

You’re doing good work and I wish you the very best. We can bounce ideas if you want. I’m not in a position to undertake this development with my present responsibilities but if implemented, i would love to contribute the few locations I’m aware of.
