When artillery and troop movements were key then holding an urban environment like that was critical. Now that drones rule, the plains are more defensible than a city, there’s a reason the width of the grey zone / contested zone is much wider now. Losing any ground is obviously not ideal but it’s not as bad a thing as it once was.
