Unexploded ordinance isn’t just mines that you set off by walking on them. This place sounds like it was a range that they shot missiles and artillery at so that means there might be whole ass artillery shells unexploded that won’t necessarily explode by pressure but by degradation of the chemicals. They might get rid of 99% of what’s on the island and miss something below the surface.
