The greatest factor contributing towards the global populist turn is the failure of capitalism and the ensuing economic chaos that is following, coupled with crazed neoliberal policies that have gutted societies of their public institutions and communal wealth, in favor of a few rich assholes getting richer.
Western governments don’t counter this, because a turn towards fascism suits them and their bosses. In fact, they are the ones generating the most fake news, in an effort to placate an ever-angrier population and to create enemies as distractions and opportunities for curbing more freedoms.
Case in point, it’s been nearly 10 years we’ve been hearing about Russian troll farms. Whole committees and organizations have initiated probes into the matter. Millions have been spent. Thousands of man-hours dedicated. Yet, all we have to show for it are “indications” that certain posts were made using a “Cyrillic keyboard”.
Meanwhile, Western politicians are travelling to other countries, perching themselves up in the squares of capital cities and inciting the local population to revolt against their government (Georgia, Syria, Ukraine). But no, it’s the Russian troll farms that are dangerous.
Actually, it’s quite ironic that you mention Cambridge Analytica, which was a well-documented case of Western-directed influence on Western democracies. But sure, they got caught, and got shut down, and no Western government will attempt to influence online discourse ever again.
