The Haitian independence debt (French: Dette d’Indépendance Haïtienne) involves an 1825 agreement between Haiti and France that included France demanding an indemnity of 150 million francs in five annual payments of 30 million to be paid by Haiti in claims over property, including Haitian slaves, that was lost through the Haitian Revolution in return for diplomatic recognition. Haiti was forced to take a loan for the first 30 million, and in 1838 France agreed to reduce the remaining debt to 60 million to be paid over 30 years, with the final payment paid in 1883. However, according to a 2022 The New York Times analysis, because of other loans taken to pay off this loan, the final payment to debtors was actually made in 1947. They approximated that 112 million francs was actually paid in indemnity, which is equivalent to $560 million in 2022 after adjusting for inflation.

Fucking Wild. Friendly reminder that France is a horrible country run by people in a race to the bottom against England, Spain, and Germany.

The only country I can think of to have such a Euro-centric view while only knowing 4 of them is the US.

Those 4 have a long way to go before they’re as shite as you.

It’s all the same people. Transnational corporations, billionaire international investors and bankers, and their gaggle of Ivy League friends who all went to the same country clubs and boarding schools.

Bernard Arnault and Donald Trump have more in common than you and your local Parliamentarian.

Many countries have billionaire rulers. However Japan during WW2, or Belgian occupation in Africa are viewed as having taken worse actions than billing Haiti for independence.

True but they quoted the collection after independence before claiming it’s a race to the bottom.

Also shows that it’s more than just those 4 countries.

I’m French, and while I can’t speak for the other three countries, France is definitely heading the same way as the US

Maybe the fate of the US will inspire a different course. As an American, I definitely support our demise serving as a warning to others.

You can correct me but weren’t the Huguenots a better example of terrible things you’ve done?

As much as I repel this action by the french State, I think it’s quite unfair to criticize the currently leadership for that.
