I wish to make high quality animation. The machine is more than 15 years old. What are the upgrades required for making such a machine suitable for making high quality animation and for working on Godot ??
Blender hardware requirement changes after 5.0 if your rig has components older than that you need to replace them. it’s not a hard requirement but otherwise troubleshooting issues get tough.
-
NVIDIA: GeForce 900 and newer, Quadro Tesla GPU architecture and newer, including RTX-based cards, with NVIDIA drivers.
-
AMD: GCN 4th gen and newer.
-
Intel: Kaby Lake architecture and newer. Always make sure to install the latest drivers from the graphics card manufacturer website
Other than that, having faster machine always helps but it really depends on what you’re after. Game-ready character motion? film(realistic or stylized)? motion graphic type of animation? If you want animation with somulation their codebase are not so up to date to incorporate gpu speedup (at least for cloth).

No upgrades are required. You can use your machine to make high-quality animation.
Wouldn’t rendering still take a lot of time on it though?
Depends on your definition of a “lot of time”.
You could just say “yes” 👀
I could also say “broombooroom”. Or “pine”.
@Lembot_0006@programming.dev what’s the joke going on here ??🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
No joke, i just found it amusing the other commenter was tiptoeing around saying plainly that an oder machine will, most certainly, be slower than a current one when performing any processing task.
Doesnt mean it wouldnt suit your needs though
@GregorGizeh@lemmy.zip I meant to ask @Lembot_0006@programming.dev why he mentioned that broombroom and pine.
You might be able to get away with just upgrading the graphics card. Depending on your setup, that might also necessitate a larger case.
Depending on the software requirements you might need more RAM and a better CPU. If you need a new CPU, then you’ll need a new motherboard. At that point, you’ve got a whole new machine. 😂
~And you might as well upgrade your storage while you’re at it.~
@dohpaz42@lemmy.world l think you’ve understood my problem perfectly. I’m thinking of an 8gb ram, Ryzen 3, AMD gcn 4th generation, 512 GB SSD.
If you can afford it - given the recent high-cost of ram - I’d recommend at least 16GB. Otherwise, make sure your motherboard can support more ram for when costs come back down.
Good luck!
@dohpaz42@lemmy.world we’ll think about the future later on. For the time being, do you notice that I prefer AMD over other brands for GPU and CPU ?? Considering my choice, which brand would you recommend for the mother board ?? I tend to prefer that which other people generally wouldn’t prefer.
