    Imagine being there - that being the first expression of civilization in the most literal sense - the rise of the city, civitas, for the first time in human history.

    It’s awe-inspiring on its own, but as a novel and regionally unprecedented development at that time, I imagine it must have been even moreso.

      You might like the novel A Cat at the End of the World if you haven’t already read it. It’s Greek, not Mesopotamian but touches upon the idea somewhat.

      For sure. Just think-- you’re from a large, fluorishing village, in which you’re fairly bursting with pride at how most other villages are ‘puny things,’ and then come fact to face with this unfathomable work… clearly of the gods!
