Forgive me if this has been covered elsewhere, but I couldn’t find info on new user restrictions or time limits, so I thought I’d ask here.
I noticed my comments always show 1-upvote, even after some time passes. Is this a new-user restriction, or are votes being cast but not displayed? Personally, I don’t care about points, but I use votes as feedback to gauge whether my contributions are relevant. I also noticed fewer replies to my comments than I’d expect, given my experience on the previous instance. Is this a visibility thing for new accounts, or just coincidence? I’m here to chat, so I’d love to hear from others!
Thanks for running this instance. I know it’s not easy to run or mod. I hope this can help other newcomers, as well!
Hi.
So I checked the logs, and it turns out that your username, Ænima, which, by the way, I love, is causing your votes to be rejected.

@rimu@mastodon.nzoss.nz @rimu@piefed.social Rimu, is this just a Piefed limitation, or would these special characters be impacting for other Fediverse applications? What is the best approach for resolving this?
Rimu is the main developer. If he doesn’t see this, I’ll ping him.
I’m sorry about this. I know it’s frustrating.
@feddit-admin @rimu@piefed.social As the effect on other fediverse systems (and PieFed!) is unknown, I have altered the registration form so that only A-Z and 0-9 characters are accepted as a user name.
Lemmy.world has none of the comments.
And I believe other people set just their display name to unicode characters, and keep the account name ascii characters… I believe that’s how other people have emojis or arabic in the name. maybe Ænima could do the same…
I don’t see a workaround. Both the display name and the account name have the same special character. The only option may be to start over with a new account, and give up the great look :(
I believe the user interface mostly shows the display name next to posts, comments, etc. Doesn’t it? So the look would be alright in most places. And some people have characters like emojis in it. But it obviously needs to be a new/different username if it’s like this.
Yeah. I believe you are right. The account username is “ænima” but I only see “Ænima” on posts and stuff.
You are absolutely correct!
I was surprised the registration form allowed me to use the character and had believed that it was using some sort of serialization in the background that other instances had not. Sorry to create more work for you and/or others.
I can’t speak for other people but I believe you’re fine. You contributed in the process of ironing out a bug / edge-case and that’s a very appreciated thing.
Appreciate it!
