This will likely be a more involved fix on our end, since a number of the data points need us to contact third party organizations (the coordinates, the greenhosting, etc). I’ll add it to our todo list for later :)

Ah, ok that makes sense. That would be wasteful for something that is only useful on the rare occasion.

In that case, a troubleshooting mode might work better, where the user can run tests somewhere in the user settings. Or a button somewhere on the feed that the user can click on to run the analysis on demand.

IMO there’s a difference between the vibe coded one-shot projects (which tend to have those AI generated looking websites), and using LLMs for targeted and focussed suggestions. The contents of that file and a quick skim of the PRs and commits doesn’t change my mind on that, the project still looks like it’s made by competent developers who may or may not use AI for debugging/brainstorming.

I know some people will still prefer having zero AI usage and that’s fine too. For me their AI use doesn’t meet the threshold for me to have doubts about the quality and longevity of the product.

They’re probably using a static site template, maybe Astro.

They’ve put a lot of work into Bonfire, off the top of my head

• working with activitypub stakeholders to get a proper standard for groups (which helps us directly)
• tooling for other platforms to use
• a separate platform focussed on academics with integrations to academia services

Some other ideas I forgot to add to the other comment

• Have some mechanism for people to suggest which niches get worked on, and then have one person decide on the schedule. Else it gets disorganized

• Shorten the cycles to a few weeks rather than months. I feel like people will get impatient if they need to wait months to get past a niche they don’t care about. Two weeks might be a nicer starting point, and then you can adjust it up or down?

• Do outreach about the project all over the place, and not just in fedigrow. Fedigrow reaches the involved and active people, but not everyone else that might be interested in the theme. For example:

  • Ask people about their favorite communities for the topic of that cycle on !asklemmy@lemmy.world, !ask@piefed.social, etc
  • Memes in !lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world (see the beans, corn, and similar trends), which are very low effort
  • post lists of that cycle’s relevant communities in !newcommunities@lemmy.world and !communitypromo@lemmy.ca

• While you can prioritize one community, don’t restrict it to that one. It will be easier to find people interested in crafts, compared to say crochet specifically. Also people can have strong feelings about which specific community or instance is best, and some users might refuse to post to an instance they don’t agree with. So if you give a list of which communities you want to grow, it might go over better

I think there are a lot of people who might want to help, but don’t have the time/energy/experience to organize it

If you can, I would prefer that you use the existing communities for this project because there’s no need to dilute efforts further. The mod in !selfhosted@lemmy.world has done a good job of updating the rules to deal with those. It seems like some SEO or supply chain scheme.

The ones mentioned in OP seem to be one user that is spreading their questions around multiple accounts, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing if they’re posted at a rate that would be fine with a single account, and if they aren’t using more than one account in a particular thread.

From what I remember about the deletion pattern, one of the accounts claimed to be doing it for mental health reasons. Whether that is true or not, to me it felt like they were creating bait posts to rile people up. People saw through it most of the time

We do have bots, but at least some of the weird activity mentioned in this post seems to be from a handful of real people that are using the platform in a weird way

Each instance is run by a different team, often based in different countries and jurisdictions. Day to day, the main differences will be around content policies (moderation, how openly federated it is)

It’s like picking between different email providers, just that all have more or less the same features.

Can you edit the post to say that you suspect that this is what they are doing instead of stating it as a fact?

I am also suspicious, but looking through the accounts the activity could still be a human using LemmySchedule to schedule the posts ahead of time. There aren’t that many posts each day, and I couldn’t easily map the posts to any existing subreddit or other source. Normally these bot accounts have a lot more posts, and that’s why they get blocked or banned.

It could just be a user that is using potentially harmful strategies to get communities related to their interests off the ground
