We don’t know how thoughts or consciousness arise, so for all we know it is entirely possible that there’s flickers of consciousness happening in the matrix that makes up an LLM every time the model iterates.

So, if someone made all calculations by hand, using pen and paper, to produce the llm output, would that make sense to think about some form of consciousness arising somewhere? Perhaps in the paper? In the pen? In the person’s brain, as a hosted virtual conscience?

The addiction thing is so true. Bug tech invest a lot into making their user experience as addictive as possible. The mainstream social networks are highly optimized attention catchers create for making people spend as much time as possible in them, and the fediverse can’t provide with that addiction, so the more people are addicted to social media, the worse their experience around here will be.

I have been noticing a drop in post/comments diversity and quantity. The diminishing users is something noticeable and sad.

Why are birth rates so high in these regions and not in more developed areas?

Development is exactly what makes birth rates go down. People also used to have more kids in developed countries in the past, and it went down the more the countries’ development indicators went up.

The reason? It’s not simple, there are entire theses over the subject and, likely, different causes, but roughly, it’s lower education levels, more religious influence, less women rights, criminality, etc. For many people in poorer places, having kids is not an option at all. It “just happens.” Actually choosing to have kids is something very recent historically and far from something universal.
