Yeah it probably really is that simple.
Aargh.

Yeah it probably really is that simple.

Its weird to think about that.
Boycotting russia plunged Europe into huge difficulties, energy crisis and whatnot… and everyone, including (most of) the politicians accepted it with not much fuss.
What would boycotting israel do? Some weapons manufacturers couldn’t make a couple of millions? Just sell the stuff to Ukraine with EU backed loans.
I don’t get whats the hold up.

Thats the correct way to do it. Make the government buy/invest in local stuff as much as possible, support local manufacturing but let the people decide what they want to buy.

Good point, I forgot where I was commenting on.
At the moment I’m doing most of my searches with Ecosia (yeah I know, they use bing and google, but at least they are German and planting trees), its only when Ecosia fails, I switch to Kagi. At this rate it will probably take me a year to run out of the 100 free searches that are included in the trial.

I too switched to DeepL. Also doing the trial period of kagi.com search. Probably gonna buy the “family” plan for me and my dad.

This is what I keep telling to the car brains who are against building trams, buses and whatnot. Its been quite successful. “Don’t you want all those morons who drive 3km/h under the limit and on the left lane, to use the bus?”

But that name has the same problem as “defund the police.” People just see the title and make their conclusions from it without looking inside and thinking about it too much. Though I gotta say, the reddit fuckcars was a bit unhinged at times, a few times I visited that place, they were nearly demanding lynching of people who happened to own a car. But thats also partly the fault of reddit being a bit mad at times.
Aanyways, the past couple years, as I’ve aged 200 years, I’ve come to the conclusion that going to extremes with anything is really unhealthy for you. Like… yes, go vegan. But don’t spit on someone if they eat a sausage. Use bicycles and public trans, but don’t throw milkshakes on a guy driving his Yaris. Make sure you don’t litter, but don’t push a guy under a bus because they accidentally dropped a candy wrapper. Don’t waste food, but also don’t force someone to eat moldy food just because they forgot grandmas gravy in the fridge for 3 months.
I try to stay away from these fuckXYZ communities. They always start as a funny pretend-extreme way, but they pretty much always end up dropping the pretense and become actually toxic. Full disclosure, I haven’t checked the lemmy fuckcars, they are probably nice and chill people.

Hear hear.
Its a small miracle that we can do hundreds of thousands of kilometers with these engines without major problems. Knowing how complex they are and how small and weak some of the parts are, I’m baffled that they aren’t constantly dismantling rapidly into thousands of pieces

I gotta say. I’m a car enthusiast. I love cars and the combustion engine. I’m one of those people who loves Top Gear/Grand Tour. I watch rally, F1, WEC and others. Annoying, stupid little things but I love them.
However. I support any and all efforts to build public transportation, bike lanes, walkable cities. I will never complain about fuel being expensive or regulations that limit my ability to drive a ICE car. I won’t shed a tear if the ICE is banned completely. Anyone who does is a short sighted moron.
Anyway, lets bomb more of russian oil infrastructure and let the petrol heads cry.

To Ukraine: Please keep up the good work, bomb russia more please and thank you. I don’t care if a couple of your drones gets a bit lost and drops in my country, good practice for our air defenses. I don’t care if the fuel price goes trough the roof, summer is coming, I have a bicycle, I can walk.

believe it or not, vast majority of people already do not know how to properly do that and dentists do not teach us
Well thats another thing, that I think is the problem. It seems to me that people these days expect others to teach their kids how to do things. I don’t think dentists should be the ones who teach people how to brush their teeth, it should be the parents. I read recently that kindergarten kids not being potty trained by their parents is becoming a massive problem, I guess the parents expect that to happen in the kindergarten as well. Same goes with discipline and basic behavior. Apparently school teachers have noticed a major change in kids’ ability to behave properly. This constant coddling and “theres an app for that” is going to ruin everything.
My backup is just actually do things intentionally. I don’t care if It is slow, I have time, why would I rush things. I guess I am trying to enjoy the journey rather than focus on goals and stuff.
This is my only hope. I don’t know if its just the bubble I’m in, but I’ve noticed more and more people going back to doing things the “old” or “hard” way. Most of it is people ditching social media, reddit and whatnot and replacing them with IRC, Lemmy etc. Then theres also the whole old internet revival thing, neocities.org, kagi.com/smallweb/ etc. But theres also a whole bunch of people who are moving away from the city and live more frugally.
Obviously its a small fraction of the population, but who knows, maybe it will grow into something bigger. At the moment I think theres going to be a split, at least online, with people who refuse to use the shiny new software and services and will stick to IRC and other, simpler things.
This turned into a ramble, I’ll stop while its still coherent on some level

I feel like this sort of stuff will just make everyone completely useless. If we need the toothbrush to tell us how and where to brush our teeth, we are doomed. I hope that day never comes. But it looks like we are heading straight towards it, running and laughing like maniacs.
My backup plan of moving into the woods to live as a recluse is starting to feel more and more like the main plan.

Well obviously you don’t have to use it. But the fact that there is an app for your fucking toothbrush is just stupid and makes me despair.

Waterfox was one of the browsers I was considering about 2 months ago, when I was looking to change from Firefox, after 26 years of use.
I ended up with LibreWolf. Seems to have been the correct choice. Once Kagi gets Orion out in a non-flatpak thing, I’ll check it out and perhaps change to that.
Edit: though this decision by Waterfox doesn’t seem to be too horrible. Just seems a bit weird to have it built in but off by default?
Edit2: Ah, its just the text based ad(s) on startpage that will be enabled by default. If I understood correctly.

What was the point of launching a new thing. What was the problem with just using LibreOffice?

And no nonsense phone app.
lol what? Thats a thing?
I want one of those tech youtubers to do a test. Buy every product that has an app. Toothbrush, scale, microwave, dishwasher, kettle, oven mittens, etc, install all those apps and see how much they can mess up their phones. Bonus points if they figure out what data they are sending out.
Good that you shared, I like knowing that these projects exist :)
Opens link, sees its in German
Mein gott, muss das sein? So ein bockmist aber auch.
(thats the full extent of my German language skills)
The US thinks we do.
