Imo, it’d be better to stick to using whichever instance you picked, and maybe using another instance, preferably with another software, to see what’s about. Mastodon is what I’d suggest for minimal overlap with Lemmy. Later, you could check something like Mbin, Friendica or PieFed for a reason you may notice as you rotate between Lemmy and Mastodon.

Instances may have different focuses, e.g. ani.social being focused on anime, hexbear.net on communism, and lemmy.world being generalist.

Instances may also use different software, like mine which uses Mbin, FediNSFW (successor of LemmyNSFW) using PieFed, Mastodon.Social using Mastodon, etc. And each software has a different focus in design and functions.

An instance may also block communications with another, e.g. if a given instance is rampant with bots and scammers, the two involved instances are not aligned ideologically, and so on.

Also on a small tangent, this “defederation”, the process of blocking communications with another instance, is to be expected. Instances won’t always align, and I’d be concerned if they always did. But if you’re ever caught in the cross-fire, it’s easy to mitigate, like with having an alternative account here or there, and/or by using RSS feeds for your followed communities and users as the fediverse is full of those (plus Lemmy and a few others have hardcoded links for searches so you could easily add a redirect script).

From what I could observe, getting an account banned bans the IP, and trying to log in on a banned IP bans the given account, making for what feels like a “plandemic”, or at least a very poorly thought or overzealous anti-ban circumvention feature.

Still, if the platform doesn’t want you, no need to think twice, I guess, so welcome aboard!

And about Instagram, there’s Pixelfed which tries to be an alternative to it, if you’d be interested to explore around. There’s also generally fediverse-compatible alternatives to most of the major services out there. Also Mbin and Friendica are very overarching if you’d wish to try them out too, having some degree of compatibility to most other types of posts from the fediverse (PieFed’s also working on that though it may need some maturing).

Also would need to rewrite to not sound as technical, but features-wise, I’d recommend Mbin, Friendica or, once it matures more, PieFed, since all 3 are overarching, being able to access Reddit-like posts, Twitter-like posts, and those compatible with either.

Seconded! Also should help with discoverability overall, still one of the weaker points of the fediverse.

I guess it’s one way to induce community engagement. Though an idea, don’t overpost if you do it yourself, first for the risk of being ignored, and second to not burn through ideas too quickly.

Also, if you want ideas for filler community games, there’s always some popping up at GOG’s general forum.

I can think of optional integration to other services as being an useful feature while at the same time relatively friction-free.

Some examples that come to mind that could give some integration ideas are Facebook the company with Threads the social media (but is tarnished by the company itself), Bridgy Fed, Wafrn, and Friendica bridging AT Protocol and ActivityPub (the first one seemingly being very popular), NeoDB allowing cross-referencing and importing entries from other databases and platforms, and RSS Parrot sharing posts from RSS feeds as ActivityPub posts (though sadly in this last one, interactions are one way only).

You’d be putting your life on the line, so a suggestion if you go through with this idea:

Have someone you can entrust the site to that wouldn’t be targeted by the regime (at least immediately, maybe a foreigner?) in case you go MIA, or someone “suicides” you.

Also, hosting an anti-dictatorship platform fully within the borders the dictatorship controls means it could easily hunt down those hosting it. They wouldn’t need to pick leaves one by one if they chop the whole tree down, in an analogy. From what I follow of news about Iran, its regime appears to be more immediately an enemy of the US, Israel, Lebanon and Russia, and the EU governments appear to be shifting to be openly against it, so maybe worth looking for VPS providers aligned with those countries, I’d think.

Also, people often use Telegram, but internet being cut makes it somewhat unreliable. Alternatively, what P2P or other portable relay technologies are there, so that even if the origin of the network disappears or internet is cut, it keeps floating around? I can only think of amateur radio broadcast, similar to how Poles did in the Iron Curtain time, but similarly to there back then, you’d need to be on the run after each short broadcast, so you’re not easily found.

Block what bothers you and move on. Unlike Reddit, at least here you can find alternatives if you do it.

Haven’t seen other posts from Programming.dev users, but since apparently the instance was suffering from people abusing the account creation system to cause problems, maybe it’s an instance-wide behavior while they’re handling the issue?

I think you can find assets in both Itchio and DLsite. Just be mindful of their licenses, and that DLsite is primarily NSFW.

Alternatively, there are gamedev forums (or adjacent) that allow recruiting people to your projects, so maybe you could ask in those if anyone would want to do music commissions for a game. Two forums with recruitment threads/boards I know are Fuwanovel and RPG Maker’s. Plus you can probably find communities that allow recruitment, game assets commissions, and/or music commissions around here in the fediverse.

Imo it’s a good use. But do make sure you read the outputs throughly. Even hand-made OCR tools can go crazy some times. Also if the AI can be fully offline / self-hosted, that’s even better imo.

Video softwares are a tad scarce, the main ones being Peertube (based on Youtube) and Loops (based on TikTok).

Peertube channels appear as communities on Lemmy from my experience. Loops I don’t think I’ve seen being federated to Lemmy before, so I imagine posts from instances using it get treated as pure microblogging, meaning barely anything gets fetched by Lemmy.

Odysee has native RSS so setting up fediverse bots should help at least have some form of integrated feed.

Depending on the service, you don’t even need an app. The instances’ sites can usually run fine on browsers, and when they don’t, Lemmy, Mastodon and the sort can usually play the videos embedded.

Might be just age, since it’s a 9 y.o. console already. Or like the PS Vita, it could also be some bug in the system.

Did a quick 1h test after most replies:

With some heavier game open but minimized, the battery went down slowly while charging through USB.

With the #Switch turned off, the battery went up instead, but indeed slow as warned.

Might need to test further, but results seem decent enough already!

I see. Luckily the idea would be to have a passive charge, since the computer is often on.
