I’m not saying it does, but the evidence presented here isn’t showing that it doesn’t. Consider a toy model in which most children are “good” and never misbehave, but some children are “bad” and often misbehave. Parents physically punish misbehaving children, and physical punishment does reduce misbehavior. This model would show the same “physically punished children behave worse” outcome that the article describes.
The article doesn’t mention how they’re ruling out the standard “bad behavior causes physical punishment” interpretation.

I can’t quite read the first word - looks like “ЛУБЧЕК” (Lubchek) which might be a name? The rest means “with great irritation repeats everything which he said earlier about the difficulties to which is coupled the solution of these questions.” It sounds awkward in English because I’m trying to preserve the original Russian wording.

I was also a very active user of traditional forums but, in my experience, small niche subreddits (when I was on Reddit) were a decent substitute in terms of content, since posts could stay on their front page for several days. Lemmy isn’t big enough to have those yet but I hope it will be. The thing I miss most about forums isn’t the format but rather the community. The forum I posted on the most had only a few dozen regulars and I knew them.
There was the guy with a kind, insightful take on controversial issues and a fetish for women with more than two arms. The active duty marine who reliably posted harsh truths. The feminist I didn’t get along with at all despite agreeing with her about most things. The dedicated father who bought real razor wire for his daughter when she wanted a UN-peacekeeper-base themed birthday party. The very determined conservative who defended his position no matter how outnumbered he was and once bragged that he had given his wife several dozen orgasms in a row…
I suppose I was the young man with strange views about what was or wasn’t fair and a great deal of anger over any perceived unfairness. (I don’t think I was particularly well-liked.) The internet is so much less personal now.

Public Policy Polling’s recent poll on conspiracy theories mostly showed up on my Facebook feed as “Four percent of Americans believe lizardmen are running the Earth”.
(of note, an additional 7% of Americans are “not sure” whether lizardmen are running the Earth or not.)
The lesson from all three of the cases in this post seems clear. When we’re talking about very unpopular beliefs, polls can only give a weak signal. Any possible source of noise – jokesters, cognitive biases, or deliberate misbehavior – can easily overwhelm the signal. Therefore, polls that rely on detecting very weak signals should be taken with a grain of salt.

Have any North Korean soldiers surrendered or allowed themselves to be taken prisoner? I recall that there was a heavily wounded soldier who was captured but later died of his wounds, but I haven’t heard about any other such incidents.
