The goal of these posts is to identify community gaps that people want filled, but not to arbitrarily create communities to “fill those gaps”. Instead put together teams that can/will work together to sustain their communities (many hands make light work).
To that end, I’m looking for anyone’s input about potential communities (not necessarily to be created anytime soon). Some ideas about potential input (don’t need to answer any or all the questions):
- Is there an inactive community you would like to subscribe and/or post to? (No pressure to try and revive it)
- Do you have an idea for a new community? (It would be helpful if you provide some detail about what the community would be focused on and what sort of posts it would contain)
- Do you have a suggested community name? (Not required, but if you have an idea, feel free to share)
- Do you have a suggested community instance/server? (Some servers have significantly different views on different topics)
- Are you willing to be a community mod? (Not to pressure you, just to provide support, if indicated)
Discussion of a working guide to be added to the sidebar has been suggested. It’s been confirmed that Piefed has the functionality for each community to have its own wiki (and I’ve found the feature, currently playing around with it a bit).
The guide could contain:
- Beginners guide to the fediverse (many exist), perhaps a quick overview (with links to more extensive breakdowns) before jumping into the threadiverse (Thanks ImmortalColeSlaw @lemmy.today)
- On-boarding/quick breakdown of the threadiverse with relevant terms
- Demographics. Know demographic sets: Fedecan 2025, Lemmy.nz 2025, Any others?
- Suggestion of types of posts (ex. opinion requests, question-answer)
- Any other suggestions?
Started Communities:
Suggested Communities - Potential subscribers or active users:
- Mahjong
- missingno @fedia.io
- Deer (images)
- Auster @thebrainbin.org
- Rooftops (pictures of rooftops, rooftop gardens, cozy rooftop spaces)
- Potential subscribers: squirrel @cake.kobel.fyi, vicinus @piefed.zip
- CottageIndustry (users can offer items they make for sale)
- This idea probably needs some additional considerations (spam, payment, fraud, etc.) before actualizing. Some initial commentary here.
- billionsandbillions @piefed.social
Suggested Feeds:
- Hand&Eye (showcase anything made with your hands (only physical, nothing digital))
- Examples: Woodworking, leathercraft, pottery, soap, candles, baskets, clothes, bookbinding, stained glass, glass blowing, bags etc.
- billionsandbillions @piefed.social
Struggling Communities (if you can, throw a post/comment their way):
- !android@lemdro.id
!ecospheres@mander.xyz (instance currently down)Seems mander.xyz might be down permanently :(- !triathlon@lemmy.world
Also, let us know if you have any suggestions about this community or post.
Apologies for not posting this yesterday. I’ve been trying to do these posts one day later each week, to make sure everyone would see them, even if they only show up once a week. Shifting the post date by a day does not help me keep in mind that I need to make the post on a specific day.
Edit: ecospheres lives again: ~~!ecospheres@piefed.zip, https://piefed.zip/c/ecospheres~~
Edit 2: Saving the old posts via piefed.zip did not work. Community recreated at !ecospheres@slrpnk.net

I made !space_astronomy@piefed.social but that’s it :)
PieFed can reassign a remote community to be a local one but that relies on having received lots of posts from the original instance in the past. https://piefed.social/c/ecospheres@mander.xyz had no subscribers so it’s empty but https://piefed.zip/c/ecospheres@mander.xyz could work.
To make it happen, log into piefed.zip using a piefed.zip account, then click on 'move to piefed.zip in the ecospheres sidebar:
That sends a request to the piefed.zip admins, they need to click a button and assign your .zip account as the new owner / mod.
will the old posts show in the new community for Lemmy users too? or do only PieFed users see the migrated posts?
(not like we have a better option than this migration feature anyways lol)
From the point of view of instances other than piefed.zip, it’s a new community. When the first person joins it there may be some post backfilling that goes on but I can’t make any promises there. I think PieFed instances would backfill but am really unsure about Lemmy.
It’s not great. Worth trying though. Nothing to lose.
Coding this moving process to work better is not easy and anyway would require the origin instance to be online, which it isn’t in this case. It would also require the origin instance to have code that understood the moving process and how to play it’s part in it, which wouldn’t come to Lemmy anytime soon.
A few months ago I was all keen to make a proper community move system, wrote up a spec and showed it to the Lemmy devs. They responded and had some suggested changes but I ran out of steam, got distracted, etc and it hasn’t progressed beyond there.
still it’s better than nothing, thank you for the feature
Relatable T_T
maybe @Vicinus@piefed.zip would like to migrate the community and then add me as a moderator? I have a piefed account too @Die4Ever@retrofed.com which may integrate better
I’ve requested the move (thanks @rimu@piefed.social for the step-by-step guide). I’ll let you know when I hear back and presumably make you mod at that point (I’l try adding both your usernames, Piefed one first though).
Done!
Thank you!
@Die4Ever@retrolemmy.com, @Die4Ever@retrofed.com I think I made you moderator and owner. I pressed some buttons and not positive I did it right…
Your retrolemmy account was added at one point, but when I tried to make your retrofed account owner, your retrolemmy account disappeared. I tried adding the retrofed account again, but nothing happened. So, I assumed it was a Lemmy-Piefed communication thing and finished by removing myself as owner. You can remove me as moderator too (couldn’t figure out how to do that).
Edit: added the community to the federate sites (https://lemmy-federate.com/ and https://federation.quokk.au/).
I don’t think it worked. I don’t see any posts in either Lemmy or PieFed unless I open it on .zip. I tried manually pulling in a post by its URL but that didn’t work in Lemmy or PieFed, presumably because the posts were already assigned to the old community.
And I don’t see myself as a moderator. I tried editing the community description but it looks like it only affected the retrofed view, so I think I was editing as an admin but not as a moderator of the community. If you want to edit the description I just added the word “jarrariums” so it’s searchable
Does cross-instance community moderation work in PieFed? I know it had issues in Lemmy for a while
Hmm. I can see the past posts, but I always could…
I edited the community description to what you wrote. I also removed the matrix channel link (figured it was probably for the best, as I didn’t know where it went).
I assume cross-instance community moderation works. This community has threelonmusketeers@sh.itjust.works listed as a mod, but they also have a .zip account too. So, I don’t know if their sh.itjust.works account can actual mod or if they only show up as mod.
I made a post to see if that would help federate the community (https://piefed.zip/c/ecospheres@piefed.zip/p/1897512/moved-ecospheres-community-from-mander-xyz-to-piefed-zip). Using an old Lemmy account, it doesn’t seem to be working, but maybe it’s just a federation delay?
Update: so federation seems to be working. The community gained ~40 subscribers from all the federation bots from the federation websites. I was also able to subscribe with my old lemmy account, but still not able to see my own new post in the community.
Update 2: Tried a different old lemmy account on an instance that had a subscribed federate bot and I can see my new post, but no old posts (on mobile via voyager) :(
Edit: If the previous mander.xyz posts aren’t/can’t be saved, maybe it’s worth deleting the .zip community and creating a new community on slrpnk.net for better topic alignment. Then reposting the past mander.xyz posts in the new community (only 23 of them). Thoughts?
