Isn’t there some quote about Christians being most vicious of all towards other Christians? Or maybe it’s a similar quote about another subject…

It’s very dear to my heart - Ammianus Marcellinus, one of the last great pagan writers of the Roman Empire. “No wild beasts are so deadly to man, as Christians are to one another.”

The picture, strangely, is of a bust of Constantine, the first Christian Emperor, who Marcellinus was deeply critical of.

And the quote doesn’t have a strong association with this painting, to my knowledge, just a common thread in Christian persecutions throughout history.

              Yep!

Funny enough, those cartoonishly massive eyes were a major feature of Late Roman imperial iconography. The Emperor is more than a mere mortal man, and he is always watching…

Ah, okay. I looked at half a dozen pics of Constantine and was teetering between the eyes being stylized or them actually being a physical feature of the man.

The Emperor is more than a mere mortal man, and he is always watching…

                Not bad!

And come to think of it, maybe the original graphics creator chose Big C specifically as a critical object of Marcellinus’ quote and attitude. I haven’t quite seen that approach before in quote-graphics, but it has some legs, I suppose.

Check out this coin of Constantine I, straight-up proto-anime XD

Compare and contrast this deeply realistic depiction of Emperor Vespasian some ~250 years earlier:

                    Emperor Vespasian

Impressive, really. I can’t remember too many times a powerful leader’s image didn’t get white-washed due to one reason or another.

That might be! I just felt the need to make the clarification upon seeing it, since that depiction of Constantine, in particular, is extremely famous.

Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, “Don’t do it!” He said, “Nobody loves me.” I said, “God loves you. Do you believe in God?”

He said, “Yes.” I said, “Are you a Christian or a Jew?” He said, “A Christian.” I said, “Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?” He said, “Protestant.” I said, “Me, too! What franchise?” He said, “Baptist.” I said, “Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?” He said, “Northern Baptist.” I said, “Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?”

He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist.” I said, “Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region, or Northern Conservative Baptist Eastern Region?” He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region.” I said, “Me, too!”

“Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?” He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912.” I said, “Die, heretic!” And I pushed him over.

        Beautiful. XD

“Are you a Christian or a Jew?”

Altho I would have liked “Muslim” to appear there, at least.
