    It took me a pretty long time to realize that thing in the middle is a chamfon, for a horse, not some kind of weirdly long shield

      I don’t think it’s a chamfron. It looks like a saddle or something to hold the lance. A chamfron would have eye holes and they’re mainly one piece of metal with some padding.
