Did Vikings smoke? One guy seems to be lighting a pipe (might just be my imagination though). Thought that wouldn’t arrive until a few hundred years later.

Didn’t catch that until you said it. I can’t say for certain. Might be an artist mistake, or it might be meant to be later than I’m assuming - while the style is distinctly Scandinavian, maybe it’s meant to be a fairly backwoods (it would have to be for a fucking wooden round shield beside the door) 16th century Scandinavian home? Or maybe it’s not a pipe, though I don’t know what else it could be.

I’m gonna try to dig up the original context.

I think he’s making a sausage. Specifically, he’s finished stuffing the casing, and is now tying and/or cutting the end with his teeth while pressing the sausage tight with his hands.

I’m pretty sure he’s not smoking. If you zoom in, it looks like his hands are holding something sausage-like, not cupping a bowl. I guess it’s possible he’s eating a sausage, but this seems more like the time of day when they’re working, not eating.

Looks like it is supposed to be the Viking Age, so the pipe is either not a pipe, or an artist mistake, unless there’s some form of pre-tobacco pipe smoking practiced amongst the Vikings that I was unaware of and the source doesn’t comment on.
