The selection of texts makes it clear that he has slowly moved from being a serious journalist to a pundit that publishes mostly opinion pieces that cater to conservative and latently racist audience and are likely also attempts at rage baiting left-liberals. Basically an opportunist exploiting the “also show the other side” bias of liberal media like the Spiegel and I would not be overly surprised if his next move is to support the far-right (the AfD is very open to opportunists with migration history or LG(BT), like Alice Weidel).

Ich vermute mal der mastodon.world Moderator hatte keine Ahnung wer dieser Typ ist (ich hatte auch noch nie von dem gehöhrt), aber hat dauernd (vermutlich nicht ganz unbegründete) Beschwerden wegen Islamophobie bekommen.

It’s just a really stupid oversimplification of the facts, and if you look at the majority of the comments in German-language online newspapers, you might even think the AfD has a 90% approval rating.

I’m guessing the mastodon.world moderator had no idea who this guy is (I never heard of him either), but kept receiving complaints (presumably not entirely unfounded) about Islamophobia.

For someone who apparently thinks of themselves as rational and scientific, you exhibit a real lack of curiosity to differentiate between correlation and causation as well as a naive notion to take people’s self-serving justifications at face value (if they fit to your preconceived notion of them). Everyone is the hero in their own story, and sadly Islamophobia is widely spread with people that call themselves “liberals”.

The first - and definitely worst - experience I’ve had was 2 years ago when I got banned from !europe@feddit.org for “racism and gaslighting” on the basis of, well, pretty much nothing except the moderator’s paranoia.

It wasn’t me, but looking at your moderation log and the messages in question, I would have called it “islamophobia and downplaying neo-nazi crimes” and banned you just the same. Others are welcome to have a look at those messages and judge for themselves 🤷

Yes, you can frame it in a positive way, like the author does, but ultimately it is about hiding away from bad actors.

Personally, I think the lowest hanging fruit is open-registration servers, that like the article describes are a vector for abuse. That issue should really be solved first before discussing more closed off allow-list only networks.

Well, in the case the OP referenced, it was impossible to miss, but I grant that the other dynamic blocklist that was found after I made the above comment is more difficult to notice as an admin.

That said, Tesseract was forked from Photon for very unclear reasons, and that alone was a big red flag from the start that made me personally stay away from it.

As long as Lemmy doesn’t support password-less and revokable logins, no one should be using alternative web frontends hosted by someone other than their trusted server admin. And as this issue clearly shows, when an admin hosts it themselves the dev can’t hide it and it is easy to circumvent.

Those have been active for a few months now and usually get banned from most (non-ask) communities quite quickly.

What concerns me more is despite how obvious it is that they are bots, the posts often seem to get a lot of engagement from other accounts that are both human and some less obvious bots (or maybe lurkers).

Despite what some other people falsely claim here in the comments, scraping is actually not the same at all as federation. Besides not being reciprocal, scraping puts considerably higher load on the server to the point where it brings down entire servers or at least severely degrades the performance for legitimate users.

There is apparently an incredible amount of manipulation and legal fights happening around these reviews on Google maps, so that is probably a minefield any independent open-source developer should avoid.
