Pfft, American peanut butter doesn’t even have garlic in it.

2·20 days agoData can never be racist.
The decisions which data to collect, how to interpret it and how to act on it can all be racist.
But data is just numbers.

62·20 days agoThey managed to pull 1 billion people out of poverty and starvation, within 30 years.
Now they have a standard of living that’s almost exactly at the global average.
They so desperate, they literally such dich for hiring.

11·24 days agoCaesar had good reason to hype up the Gallic defenses, since he beat them. Writing about how good they were was meant to increase his own game.

3·1 month agoThe Roman army was basically a construction crew that built roads and cities wherever they wanted, no matter who opposed it.
But later on they had some issues with vandalism.

Buy European@feddit.uk•What are the most European Linux distributions?English
41·2 months agoIMO this completely misses the point of “buy European”.
Volunteers maintaining the distros and mirrors are spread around the globe.
Boycotting a distro because it was founded by Americans doesn’t help anyone.
You’re not buying anything. You don’t pay any money.
In fact, if you just use the distro without contributing, you’re a net drain on their resources.
(This is why the often stated “Linux should do X to get more market share” also misses the point. There is no market.)Unless you’re actually paying for an enterprise distro, then SUSE is your best option.
Just be aware they heavily cooperate with Red Hat and Microsoft, and fully embrace AI.

science@lemmy.world•Beetles Go Stealth Mode to Infiltrate Ant SocietiesEnglish
1·2 months agoI’ve read the second one, too.
It has a really weird (IMO flawed) narrative arc and is much more confusing.
The second half of it mostly deals with issues translating another race’s language.
And it’s written from the point of view of the spiders who are trying to translate.
So you as the reader also have no idea what’s going on most of the time.
Its ending leads into a direction where I decided I’m not interested in the rest of the series anymore.

science@lemmy.world•Beetles Go Stealth Mode to Infiltrate Ant SocietiesEnglish
1·2 months agoSpoiler
There was a native bug species already hiding inside the ant colonies.
The spiders reverse-engineered their trick to gain control over the ants.

science@lemmy.world•Consciousness could last hours after ‘death’English
9·2 months agoit makes it really easy to be immortal or get resurected.
Your consciousness, feelings, sensory input, and your entire character can be massively affected (even controlled) by the bacteria in your gut (which has its own separate nervous system), or by parasites.
It’s not as simple as measuring the electric signals between neurons in your brain.
What you feel, think and do is often fully controlled by processes that happen elsewhere in your body. And your consciousness just comes up with a reason for your behavior after the fact.
You’re right, I misremembered. It’s not the CO2 that has a higher effect when released at altitude than on the ground.
It’s Nitrogen Oxides, water vapor and soot.“In 1999, the IPCC estimated aviation’s radiative forcing in 1992 to be 2.7 (2 to 4) times that of CO2 alone − excluding the potential effect of cirrus cloud enhancement.[6] This was updated for 2000, with aviation’s radiative forcing estimated at 47.8 mW/m2, 1.9 times the effect of CO2 emissions alone, 25.3 mW/m2.[7]”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environmental_impact_of_aviation#Factors
this represents 28 g of fuel per kilometer, or a 3.5 L/100 km (67 mpg‑US) fuel consumption per passenger, on average.
Now take into account that CO2 released at altitude is twice as bad as on the ground, since it absorbs all sunlight before part of it gets filtered out by the atmosphere or reflected by clouds.

I just hate when I’m having a rational, sourced argument with someone, and they downvote every single one of my replies, to show me that they disagree.
I know that, that’s why we’re having this discussion. If you don’t want to have a discussion, you can just stop.
